5.8 GHz Triple patch antenna
Summary.
The Triple Feed Patch Array antenna is a circularly polarized directional antenna based on the original Triple Feed Patch antenna. It uses an array of seven connected patches, resulting in significantly higher gain. Since the beamwidth is quite narrow, this antenna is not recommended for general FPV, but it works very well for long-distance flights.
Features.
1. Good radiation efficiency. Most FR4-based patches are very efficient because FR4 has a high loss at 5.8 GHz. In addition, most antenna arrays have higher power supply losses. The design uses coupling elements to keep the power supply network idle and reduce these losses.
2. Very good axial ratio, not only directly perpendicular to the patch, but also eccentric.
3. High gain, but not higher than the theoretical gain for a 7 element array. This is because maximizing the gain leads to high side lobes and poor axial ratio.
4. Very low side lobes, almost all energy is concentrated on the main lobe. This increases the width of the main lobe, but adds some boost.
